“Ply” is the number of paper layers in the board. More layers make a stronger box, and a heavier, more expensive one. Choosing the lowest ply that protects your product keeps both your box price and your delivery charge down.
3-ply: for most online orders
Two flat sheets with one wavy layer between them. Good for clothes, cosmetics, books, accessories and anything that weighs a few kilos at most. This is what most online sellers use every day.
5-ply: when the parcel is heavy or stacked
Two wavy layers. The corners hold up better when parcels are thrown into a courier van or stacked in a hub. Choose it for shoes, kitchenware, small appliances and bulk orders.
7-ply: heavy goods and export
Three wavy layers, for heavy items, long journeys, export and cartons stacked high in a warehouse.
